Open Space is a game that plays itself while you work. It gives you no extra duties: you complete tasks, meet deadlines and stay active - and your character earns points. It is designed to be fun and motivating, not to assess employees.

Where can I find my character?

Settings (cog) → Profile tab → “Open Space - Your character” section. The card shows:

  • your character’s level and progress towards the next level,
  • PB (Office Points) - prestige points that build your level and cannot be spent,
  • Paperclips 📎 - you're already collecting them; you'll be able to spend them on decorations for your character and desk once the shop arrives (a planned future stage, not available yet),
  • a day streak - consecutive working days on which you create or close a task, or write a message (in a task or in a chat); the card displays it from two days running onwards,
  • Office ranking - the top 3 and your position,
  • Recent points - a history of your rewards.

How do I earn points?

In brief: you earn points for closed tasks - more if you finish before the deadline - plus a small bonus for every day you work in the app and for several working days in a row. The office ranking gets the team competing in a friendly way: everyone's keener to close a task today rather than put it off until tomorrow, and move up a spot. Points can never be lost, so it motivates rather than stresses people out.

Exact rates:

ActionReward
Closing a task (status "Done")+10 PB, +5 📎
Completing a task before its due datean additional +5 PB
First activity of the day - a new or closed task, or a message ("a day at the office")+2 PB
Streak of consecutive working days - every 5 days+10 PB
Reaching the next level+10 📎

Fair play rules:

  • A task earns points if it has a due date or comes from someone else (it was created by someone else or other people are assigned to it). Your own note without a due date does not earn points.
  • Each task earns points only once - reopening and completing it again will not add any points.
  • Daily limit for points earned from tasks: 100 PB.
  • You cannot lose points. Overdue tasks do not take anything away - the game rewards rather than punishes.
  • Weekends do not break your day streak: Friday → Monday counts as continuous.

Level-ups and notifications

You’ll get a notification on the island for each achievement (Notification Centre, ⭐ Open Space category): “Great! +15 PB and +5 📎 (ahead of schedule!)” when you complete a task, and separate notifications for a streak bonus and a level-up. Notifications don’t disappear if the app is closed at the time - they’ll arrive the next time you open it. The only exception is “day at the office” (+2 PB), which is added quietly to avoid clutter - you’ll see it in the player card’s history.

Level thresholds increase (level 2 starts at 100 PB, level 3 at 250 PB, etc.). When you level up, you will receive a notification and +10 paperclips.

Privacy

The player card has a “Hide me from the leaderboard” switch - you’ll continue earning points, but only you can see them. The leaderboard only shows people who have earned points and haven’t hidden themselves.

For administrators

Settings → Advanced → “Open Space game” section - one switch turns off the game for everyone (the card disappears and points stop accumulating). Earned points aren’t lost - they’ll be back when the game is switched on again.

What we're planning

The items below are not yet available - this is a plan for the next stages of the game. Stage 2 is set to bring a shared, isometric office: everyone will have their own desk, your character will reflect your current work, and paperclips will be spendable on decorations. Stage 3 is set to add weekly challenges, special events and small interactions between characters (e.g. "buy someone a coffee").
